Some Rational Thoughts on Gun Control

Sometimes you find something that says it all and says it right, and with Mr. Carl Stevenson’s comment on the GodfatherPolitics.com article, Stop Trying to Reason with Anti-gun Advocates, that is just what we have. Thanks Carl!

With all of the hysteria, hype, and misinformation regarding gun control that’s emanating from the “progressive” left and flooding the media in the aftermath of the recent tragic shootings in Oregon and Connecticut, there are many important things that need to be raised into the public consciousness and which are deserving of serious consideration by the public.

I’m going to start with the origins of the Gun Control Act of 1968 (“the GCA68”), since it’s in many ways the seed from which the misnamed “Assault Weapons Ban” of 1994-2004 (the “AWB94”) sprung.

Since reinstating and expanding the AWB94 is the immediate goal of Senator Diane Feinstein and her fellow tyrant wannabes, knowledge of the roots from which the ban sprung is important.

Most people don’t know that the Gun Control Act of 1968 was “written” by Senator Thomas Dodd (ironically, D-CT), the father of Senator Chris Dodd (also, D-CT), a major proponent of the AWB94.

I put the word “written” in quotes above, because Dodd actually had the Library of Congress translate Hitler’s gun laws from the original German and used them almost word for word in “crafting” the law.

This is WELL documented … poke around at http://www.jpfo.org and you’ll find the proof of that little-known fact, and much more of interest. (In particular, see http://jpfo.org/alerts/alert20…, but do poke around more on the JPFO website – there’s a wealth of useful information there.)

OK, now that we’ve established the heritage of the AWB94, let’s explore the facts about both the myths that are circulating about the weapons they seek to ban and the general outcome which has, historically, always followed the disarmament of a population.

The Bushmaster AR-15 and similar civilian weapons that Feinstein et al are demonizing and want to ban are NOT assault rifles at all. Don’t give the gun banners any leeway on these lies and distortions. Their intent is to confuse and misinform those who don’t know any better. In other words, they’re lying.

Tell people the truth … tell them that the AR-15 is not really functionally different than other rifles except that it outwardly RESEMBLES the M-16/M4 machine gun that our troops use. (For reasons of economy in manufacturing, the inherent reliability and maintainability of the underlying design, and other factors, there are a lot of common parts, but the important ones that determine function are designed to preclude illegal conversion to fully-automatic operation like the military weapons with which the gun-banners want you to confuse them.)

The guns they want to ban are NOT machine guns, as the gun grabbers and media try to convince you. They do NOT “spray bullets” as military weapons do. However their outward appearance, combined with deliberate untruths and the use of incorrect terminology, makes it easier for the deceivers to demonize these guns as they try to build support for banning them. (Which is, of course, just a step towards further bans in the future.)

Also impress up on people that the AR-15 and functionally similar guns are NOT “only suitable for a war zone” as the ban’s proponents and media personalities keep saying, but that they are, in fact, NOT really suitable for combat use at all because of their limitations. (Our troops would be SERIOUSLY out-gunned if they went into battle with AR-15s.)

Further, they are not “heavy weapons” as some of the media people keep saying. Inform people of the factual reality that these weapons are actually considerably LESS powerful than most of their grandpa’s deer rifles – to the point that in many states it’s illegal to hunt game larger than groundhogs and coyotes with the .223/5.56mm round that the AR-15 fires.

The public has to be informed so that they understand that they are deliberately being misled and misinformed by the media to advance the citizen disarmament agenda of leftist tyrant wannabes in our government. (These same people through DHS and other alphabet agencies have recently purchased over 1.5 BILLION rounds of ammo – enough to shoot every man, woman, and child in the country 3-4 times – ammo that’s illegal for military use under international law). Considering that the you and I and all of the other US taxpayers are paying for all of this ammo, it’s frighteningly reminiscent of the story of political prisoners’ families being forced to pay for the bullets used to execute them … isn’t it?

If we allow these leftist control freaks to ignore and ultimately gut the 2nd Amendment, history will inevitably repeat itself. These “gun control” proposals have NOTHING to do with preventing crime, but EVERYTHING to do with CONTROL.

Hitler disarmed the Jews and others, then murdered about 15 million.

Stalin disarmed the Russians, them murdered about 40 million.

Mao disarmed the Chinese peasants, then murdered nearly 100 million.

The Turks disarmed the Armenians, then murdered 1.5-2 million.

Pol Pot disarmed the Cambodians and murdered millions.

Rwanda disarmed its ethnic groups, then murdered millions.

The list goes on … over 170 million people murdered BY THEIR OWN GOVERNMENTS in the 20th century – AFTER they allowed those governments disarmed them.

They ALL thought “It can’t happen here” – until they were disarmed and it started, then it was too late. Don’t make the same mistake. Don’t EVER let your government disarm you.

The Founders knew that government, if not constrained at every step, will continue to accumulate power and control until it becomes tyranny. That’s why they feared standing armies and insisted that the “right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

“Never forget, even for an instant, that the one and only reason anybody has for taking your gun away is to make you weaker than he is, so he can do something to you that you wouldn’t let him do if you were equipped to prevent it. This goes for burglars, muggers, and rapists, and even more so for policemen, bureaucrats, and politicians.” – Aaron Zelman and L. Neil Smith, Hope (2001)’

The Kindergarten Massacre: Blame the Shooter, Not the Guns

The numbers in Connecticut are horrific: 27 dead, 20 of them children. The shooter is dead, so we will never really know why this happened. What we do know is this: he acquired several weapons, entered a place where he knew he would encounter no resistance, and began to shoot. He made the decision to attack these people, reinforced that decision with each every step he took on his way to that school, with each time he pressed the gas pedal on his car, with each time he pulled the trigger. He had ample time and opportunity to stop this horrible act before it happened; and he could have stopped at any time up to the point he was killed.

In short: Those deaths were entirely the fault of the murder.

That seems to be lost in the almost orgasmic cries for more gun control coming from leftist politicians and their stooges in the media. The likes of Patton Oswald, Michael Moore, Alec Baldwin, Mia Farrow, Piers Morgan (again!) and others are tweeting, commenting, pontificating, and otherwise spouting off about the need to get weapons off the street.

Never mind that guns are already under pretty strict control, and crooks and lunatics get them anyway. Never mind that the kind of gun bans they want have led to more violence and crime everywhere they have been instituted. Never mind that the one place in America with their ideal gun control laws, Chicago, Illinois, is the murder capital of the planet. In fact, Chicago gets the equivalent to the Connecticut massacre nearly every month, sometimes in a single weekend, and that is in spite of the fact that the private ownership of handguns is all but illegal.

None of that matters to these people. Why? Because they are, at heart, either leftist statists, using this tragedy to further the disarmament of the American People; or they are cowardly weaklings, willing to give up their liberty (yours, too!) in return for some state-sponsored illusion of safety. If the former, they are little more than craven opportunists seeking some political advantage. If the latter, they are banking on a governmental system that revels in the fact that it is not responsible for the safety of any person, and that it cannot be held responsible when it fails to protect the people.

The real lesson here, as it is with all of these tragedies, is that gun control does not keep anyone safe, and that “gun free” zones are really just standing invitations for mayhem and violence. Ask yourself how many lives could have been saved had one or two of those teachers been armed. It is time we recognize that people need the ability to defend themselves anywhere and everywhere they go. It is time we get rid of these free mass murder zones, get rid of onerous gun control, and accept what Jefferson said so long ago, that an “armed society is a polite society.”

I might add that it is also a safer society!

Illinois to Join the Ranks of Concealed Carry States…Like it or Not

The unthinkable has happened. In Illinois, a state dominated by Chicago’s leftist anti-gun culture, there is going to be legal concealed carry. In fact, it is going to happen within the next 180 days. That was the deadline given to the Illinois Legislature by Judge Posner, who wrote the opinion for the Seventh Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Chicago.

By stating that Illinois failed to meet its constitutional burden in the case, Posner handed Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan her worst personal courtroom defeat. In his Stevens Opinion, Posner wrote:

A blanket prohibition on carrying gun in public prevents a person from defending himself anywhere except inside his home; and so substantial a curtailment of the right of armed self-defense requires a greater showing of justification than merely that the public might benefit on balance from such a curtailment, though there is no proof it would. In contrast, when a state bans guns merely in particular places, such as public schools , a person can preserve an undiminished right of self-defense by not entering those places; since that’s a lesser burden, the state doesn’t need to prove so strong a need. Similarly, the state can prevail with less evidence when, as in Skoien, guns are forbidden to a class of persons who present a higher than average risk of misusing a gun. See also Ezell v. City of Chicago, supra, 651 F.3d at 708. And empirical evidence of a public safety concern can be dispensed with altogether when the ban is limited to obviously dangerous persons such as felons and the mentally ill. Heller v. District of Columbia, supra, 554 U.S. at 626. Illinois has lots of options for protecting its people from being shot without having to eliminate all possibility of armed self-defense in public.

In short, Illinois had to show that a substantial benefit to the people associated with disarming them in public. Madigan could not do that, there is no such substantial benefit, so she lost. Honest citizens, on the other hand, were the winners. “The debate is over,” said Todd Vandermyde, a lobbyist for the National Rifle Association. “We won. And there will be a statewide carry law in 2013.”

That is the good news…

Here is the bad news. The Illinois Legislature can still keep Illinois residents from carrying and yet fulfill Judge Posner’s order to the letter.

There are two types of concealed carry laws: May Issue and Must Issue. A May Issue state gives the local sheriff or other governing body the power to refuse to give a qualified applicant a concealed carry license, generally for any reason they like. The State of Maryland is currently defending its May Issue law in federal court, since they refuse almost everyone. Must Issue states require the licensing body to give the license if the applicant meets the legal requirements. The law gives the licensing body no discretion in the matter. Michigan is a Must Issue state.

My prediction is that Illinois, under the heavy boots of Chicago democrats, will adopt a May Issue law under which Cook County, where Chicago is located, will still be able to keep law abiding people from carrying pistols for self-defense. So will other anti-gun counties, while people living in downstate counties will enjoy their new freedom.

This order will not stop the legal and political fights over guns and self-defense in Illinois, but it is a great start.

Blacks and Gun Control

Gun control is racist. There, I said it. Originally meant to keep blacks defenseless after the Civil War, I have to wonder why African Americans embrace it at all. After all, in our modern society, they are far more likely to face violent crime than any other demographic group. You would think they would want to be able to defend themselves.

Many do, and that is good. Like everyone else, they should. The problem is that so-called “black leaders” have jumped onto the gun-control bandwagon with such abandon that you have to ask whether they actually care about their fellow blacks, or just want to earn points from the leftist leaders running the Democrat Party.

In a recent article on World Net Daily, Erik Rush observed:

Liberal blacks who defend gun control on the basis of violent crime in the inner cities are also off base in overlooking that these urban areas have been under the complete political control of liberals for decades. It is the destructive social policies of the left that have precipitated the dysfunction that leads to violence in the black community. Indoctrinated blacks, of course, do not see the method behind the madness and thus eagerly embrace the simpleton’s impossible fix: Erase guns from the equation. Like so many other Americans, blacks also accept at face value politicians’ feigned concern for our safety.

Rush is right on target, pointing out the “feigned concern for our safety” of leftist politicians. To them, the idea of public safety generally equates to…actually I am not sure what it equates to. The reason being that nothing they do actually promotes public safety. Instead, they create an intrusive and oppressive government presence (TSA anyone?) and demand obedience to that intrusion in the name of “public safety.” This approach doesn’t actually stop any violence. Just look at Chicago, the murder capital of the nation and home to all sorts of leftist “anti-crime” programs under Rich Daley and now, Rahm Emmanuel, and also home to the most draconian gun control laws in the country.

Do you think the leftists controlling Chicago and Cook County give a damn about the fact that their programs not only don’t stop violence, but actually encourage it by keeping the poor and working classes disarmed? The constant bloodshed is an excuse for more and more government control, more and more intrusion into the privacy or ordinary citizens, more and more dependence, and that is how they use it.

Make no mistake, gun control is a lie; it is a tool of political manipulation and subjugation, and it is incumbent on all free people to fight it, because if you lose the right to keep and carry firearms, what will you lose next?

Illinois Turning Even More Hostile to Gun Owners

I am not sure whether I should laugh or cry. Actually, laughter is winning out right now since I am also a believer in the adage that a people get the government they deserve. The City of Chicago, with its entrenched and horribly corrupt Democrat Machine, controls most of Illinois politics these days. So, while I do feel sorry for the Down-staters who can’t seem to free themselves from Chicago’s death grip, those in Chicago who dutifully and mindlessly vote for continued Democrat control deserve what they get in terms of taxes, crime, corruption, and violence.

Since the reign of Jane Byrne back in the 1980s, Chicago developed an increasing—and increasingly irrational—hatred of guns, gun owners, gun dealers, and the like. She instituted the City’s famous handgun ban, which was struck down by the Supreme Court in their McDonald decision. When Richard M. Daley later took over as Mayor, he ran the gun shops out of town and shut down the Lincoln Park Gun Club, which had offered skeet shooting on the shore of Lake Michigan since about 1900. During the same period, Chicago democrats spread into State government, bringing with them their corruption, Machiavellian attitudes, and hatred for guns and gun owners. Now, in addition to Illinois’ gun owner licensing and registration schemes, the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action reports that Illinois gun owners will now have to contend with this:

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn

This past summer, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn (D) vetoed the NRA-backed ammunition purchase reform bill, Senate Bill 681, after this common sense legislation had passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in the Illinois General Assembly (previously reported on here).   In a crass attempt to exploit the tragedy in Colorado and seek media attention, Quinn used his Amendatory Veto powers in a brazen attempt to impose more draconian gun control in Illinois.  Quinn rewrote the entire bill as an amendment to the Illinois Criminal Code that includes an onerous ban on the manufacture, possession, delivery or sale of commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms (inaccurately referred to as “assault weapons”), .50 caliber rifles and cartridges and “high capacity” magazines in Illinois.  Quinn’s amendment additionally tramples on the rights of Illinois citizens by creating a de facto statewide registration scheme for firearms and magazines currently owned.

If this amendment is accepted by the state legislature, law-abiding citizens in Illinois will be subjected to restrictions far beyond the scope of even the misguided Clinton “Assault Weapons“ Ban that expired in 2004 and any other similar gun ban in existence today.  The repercussions of such a gun ban would be disastrous.   As demonstrated by the failure of the federal “assault weapons” ban of 1994-2004 to produce the crime reduction that its proponents claimed it would, Quinn’s ban would do nothing to increase safety in Illinois and would only further restrict the rights of already law-abiding citizens throughout the state.

Using the favorite anti-gun tactic of confusion, by conflating certain popular semi-automatic firearms with machine guns by using the term “assault weapon,” this legislation would now target many of the most popular guns used for hunting and competition, as well as many models and magazines (those that hold more than ten rounds) used for self-defense.  If enacted, banned items would include many familiar and popular firearms, such as:

· Turkey hunting shotguns with pistol grips, like the Benelli Super Black Eagle II;

· Plinking and target rifles with thumbhole stocks, as often seen on customized Ruger 10/22s;

· High-power target rifles — even including the 1994-2004 versions of rifles like the M1A and AR-15 that were made to comply with the now-expired federal ban — because all of those rifles had handguards that “encircle” the barrel;

· Any detachable-magazine semi-automatic rifle with even a partial handguard, potentially including common hunting rifles like the popular Remington 740/7400 series, Browning BAR, and many more like them.

The Quinn gun ban would even apply to the individual parts themselves (stocks, pistol grips, handguards, folding or telescoping stocks, etc.).  Possession, manufacture, delivery or sale of any of these items would be a felony.

This amended bill would impose a massive statewide gun registration scheme.  Anyone who already possesses one of the banned guns or parts would have to provide proof of ownership and register each one with the State Police within ninety days of the effective date after enactment.  This registration requirement spans from the firearm itself to individual parts and magazines that fall under the ban.

Governor Quinn and his band of anti-gun Chicago politicians would like to see their vicious attack on the Second Amendment play out across Illinois, even as Chicago—with the state’s most restrictive gun laws—is on track to tally more than 500 murders this year.

The repercussions of such a gun ban would actually be just the opposite of what proponents claim and the results would be disastrous.  Firearms manufacturing is estimated to be a $250 million dollar industry in Illinois.  Not only would this gun ban be devastating to law-abiding citizens in Illinois, it also would wreak havoc on an entire industry, killing jobs and driving a healthy contributor to the Illinois economy out of state.  This legislation in no way promotes the safety or well-being of Illinois citizens, but is merely another attempt by gun-hating Chicago politicians to use misinformation to push draconian gun bans that will only affect gun owners, sportsmen and law-abiding citizens concerned about self-defense.

If you live in Illinois, or you have family there, then I join the NRA is calling you to action. Contact your state Senator TODAY and demand that he or she vote to override the Governor’s amendatory veto and put a stop to this anti-gun madness! Contact information for all state legislators can be found by clicking here.

Good News! The Illinois Senate today voted to override Quinn’s amendatory veto. Now it goes to the Illinois House, which will, hopefully, kill it once and for all. We’ll keep you posted.

What a Shock! More Guns Equals Less Crime!

I have maintained for years, as have many others on this side of the gun control debate, that more guns equals less crime and violence. The reason for that is simple: If the target of the criminal is armed, they are dangerous to the criminal, who passes them up for someone else less likely to kill him. We see the reverse in Great Britain, where guns are banned and crimes of violence have shot through the roof. We see it America as well, in places like Chicago, New York, and Washington D.C. where, apparently, only criminals and cops may be armed, with the predictably bloody results among those caught in the crossfire.

Now, the State of Virginia, has offered-up of statistics to go with the argument that more guns equals a safer society. Times-Dispatch.com reports the following:

The total number of firearms purchased in Virginia increased 73 percent from 2006 to 2011. When state population increases are factored in, gun purchases per 100,000 Virginians rose 63 percent.

But the total number of gun-related violent crimes fell 24 percent over that period, and when adjusted for population, gun-related offenses dropped more than 27 percent, from 79 crimes per 100,000 in 2006 to 57 crimes in 2011.

The numbers appear to contradict a long-running popular narrative that more guns cause more violent crime, said Virginia Commonwealth University professor Thomas R. Baker, who compared Virginia crime data for those years with gun-dealer sales estimates obtained by the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

“While there is a wealth of academic literature attempting to demonstrate the relationship between guns and crime, a very simple and intuitive demonstration of the numbers seems to point away from the premise that more guns leads to more crime, at least in Virginia,” said Baker, who specializes in research methods and criminology theory and has an interest in gun issues.

So there you have a 63% increase in gun ownership, and a 27% decrease in gun-related crimes. This same dynamic is mirrored on the national level as well, with violent crime dropping 12% as gun ownership and concealed carry licensing shot up. Now, this is not a connection that the Left will ever admit, but if you add in the evidence coming out of Great Britain, Australia, Chicago, New York, Washington, California, and other places under the thumb of Leftist Nanny-statists that show fewer gun owners and higher crime; the correlation is impossible for all but the most ardent kool-aid drinkers to deny.

More Americans are buying guns than ever as the truth of this correlation between guns and violence sinks into the national psyche. The Leftist media, in answer, is ramping up the coverage of so-called gun crimes to try and make the public think that more guns equals more crime. It is a lie, they know it is a lie, but the American media is now driven by ideology rather than a sincerely desire for the truth. The same goes for the gun control movement, which shamelessly manipulates statistics to show how dangerous guns are. Their statistics on children killed by guns, for example, include gangbangers up to the age of 26. These are not children, but they are in there anyway. If their arguments had merit, if they were anything more than the knee-jerk reactions of Leftists and hopolophobes (a fear of weapons), these people would not have to lie.

But they do, and that is proof in and of itself that we are right about an armed society being a polite society; and regardless of the spurious arguments coming from the gun control crowd, it always has been, and it always will be.

The Lessons of Sandy for the Self-Reliant

It has been a few weeks since Hurricane Sandy hit the hopelessly, hilariously, unprepared East Coast of the United States. Remember, Sandy was a relatively mild Category 1 storm, not the monster that was Katrina or Hugo of evil memory, so the lessons learned from those storms should have meant that FEMA, as well as State and Local agencies, would be better prepared, right?

Of course not.

FEMA opened camps that are more POW camps than they are relief camps. Mayor Bloomberg, Mayor of New York, kept the National Guard out of the hardest-hit areas of New York City because he doesn’t trust our soldiers with guns, thus retarding rescue and relief efforts and making things all the easier for looters. Long Islanders are just being allowed to twist in the wind regarding their homes as utility and governmental authorities, the very picture of power-obsessed incompetence, move at a stately, glacial pace to determine which properties are safe to rebuild and which are not; a pace that, in and of itself, has ruined lives.

These are the same people that tell you to trust them when you have a crisis, that you don’t need a gun to defend yourself because you have the State, in the form of the police, to protect you. Really?

Never mind that the experience of Chicago, New York, Washington DC, Great Britain, Australia, and other places with gun bans has been that violent crime shoots through the roof. Never mind the fact that the Supreme Court has already said that the police are not there, nor are they obligated, to protect you. Never mind that when someone is breaking into your home, or shooting at you, the police can take as long as fifteen or twenty minutes to get to you, if they come to help you at all. Never mind any of that, these facts are merely collateral to the point, which is this: The government is utterly incompetent to protect you before or during a crisis. They are very good at cleaning up the mess afterward (which is why I believe most police agencies should forget about carrying guns and body armor, and wear trash collector uniforms), but that is about all.

The State, having shown its incompetence, should not be allowed to keep you from protecting yourself, your family, or your property. Obama and his Leftist cohorts, intent on expanding and imposing ever more governmental power, are going to spend the next four years attacking your Second Amendment rights, as well as your rights to carry your weapon and use it to defend yourself. They will claim it is for safety on the streets, but it is only another step toward consolidating power.

It is time to turn away from government–since it cannot help–and toward each other. It is time to take control and be responsible for our own safety and security. Get licensed and get armed today.

The Best is Yet to Come…

Last night, Obama won. Well, it strikes me that Obama did not win as much as Romney lost. Like the sadly genteel Republicans that went before him, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, Romney conceded in spite of the fact that a) a number of states were still being counted; and b) the Democrats would have demanded recounts and filed lawsuits. They do that because they look at these elections as wars that they are determined to win. I am not sure how the Republicans see these contests, but they do not bring the passion and bloodlust of the Democrats, and that is one important reason why they are routinely beaten by the Left. Last night’s election left us in precisely the same governmental situation that we had before, with Obama in the White House, Harry Reid and his democrats running the Senate, and the Republicans running the House of Representatives. What has changed, however, is the fact that Obama cannot run for another term. As a result, he is free to do as he likes, something that the first term showed over and over that he will do regardless of Congress or the Courts.

So, what does this mean for gun owners? First, it means the likely signing and Senate passage of the U.N. Small Arms Treaty; which contains provisions that will force the country to enact highly restrictive gun control laws that will all but eliminate the private ownership of various types of guns from handguns to semi-auto rifles and shotguns. Because treaties are above domestic law, it will take a repudiation by a subsequent President, or a Supreme Court ruling, to get rid of. Speaking of the High Court, Obama has four years to stack the Court with John Paul Stevens type Leftists, who will be itching to overturn both Heller and McDonald, paving the way for the return of gun bans and confiscatory regulations. It also means the return of the so-called “Assault Weapons Ban,” either through the UN treaty or by executive order. Consider the Second Amendment plank in the Democrat Presidential Platform:

We recognize that the individual right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, and we will preserve Americans’ Second Amendment right to own and use firearms. We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation. We understand the terrible consequences of gun violence; it serves as a reminder that life is fragile, and our time here is limited and precious. We believe in an honest, open national conversation about firearms. We can focus on effective enforcement of existing laws, especially strengthening our background check system, and we can work together to enact commonsense improvements—like reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole—so that guns do not fall into the hands of those irresponsible, law-breaking few.

The language above is vague enough to encompass anything they might want to foist upon the American People, and when coupled with Obama’s statement that “the best is yet to come,” that ought to give all of us serious moment of pause.

Given that Washington is, essentially, a lost cause, our only real hope now is in the states, exercising their 10th Amendment rights. Not all of them, mind you, but with Republicans now occupying 30 of the 50 Governor Offices, and more and more states passing laws to nullify what they see as outrageous power-grabbing by Washington over the last four years. If the best is yet to come, imagine how much more nullification laws will be passed by the states.

By the way, the last time the nation was this polarized, the last time states were nullifying federal laws at this level and pace, the year was 1860. The following year, 1861, there was a bit of a dust-up between the States that lasted until 1865, killing a total of about 625,000 Americans. I returning the most divisive, most arrogant, most anti-American president ever to power, what has this nation done to its children and grand-children? Whatever it is, it won’t be good.

Now We Know Why Cook County Wants to Tax Gun Sales!

If there can be such a thing as irony in Illinois politics, this is it: Taxing gun owners to pay the salaries of anti-gun groups. In a November 1, 2012, story on the website Human Events, Neil McCabe writes:

Preckwinkle failed in her attempt to have the proceeds of the transfer tax earmarked for the healthcare expenses of Cook County gangbangers. Her plan to tax ammunition also failed.

[Illinois State Rifle Association Executive Director Richard A.] Pearson said under the new, “compromise” plan, the ammunition tax would be eliminated with the $25 “transfer” fee on firearm sales still in play and targeted to support the salaries and program costs of local gun control organizations.

Yep, you read that right: Since Preckwinkle cannot fund the healthcare for gangbangers shot in the senseless, ongoing gang warfare that grips the City of Chicago, she will tax law abiding gun buyers to fund the very people who want to eliminate their Second Amendment rights.

Let’s take that a step further: By doing that, during the worst economic slump since the Great Depression, made all the worse by what passes for Leftist economic thought and policy, they are going to drive business out of Cook County for the sake of giving the proverbial finger to local gun owners. Sure, the counties surrounding Cook will benefit from the ideologically driven stupidity of Preckwinkle and her Leftist cronies in Chicago, but innocent people in Cook County will suffer. Jobs will be lost as some businesses relocate and those who do stay in the County see their business diminish.

If anything, this new tax demonstrates one thing about Leftists in general and Toni Preckwinkle and the Cook County democrats in particular: Ideology will ALWAYS trump both economic reality and common sense.

I say we, the law abiding gun owners of America, help them along by foregoing any business dealings within Cook County, Illinois. There are plenty of other, more sensible places to do business, plenty of places that respect us, plenty of places hungry for our business. I have, for many years, refused to spend one dime within the City of Chicago because I refuse to support their policies. I now officially declare that I will expand my personal ban to include all of Cook County, and I invite everyone reading this to do the same. There is, after all, nothing there that cannot be had somewhere else and for better value.
